What's Next for the Wildcats as the Season Comes to a Close?

For the first time in 7 weeks, I got to enjoy seeing the Wildcats of Weber State win a football game on Saturday afternoon. With not a lot to play for, other than pride, and sending the seniors off with a win, the Wildcats pulled it together in the fourth quarter and mustered enough of an effort to send the Mustangs of Cal Poly home with a loss and at a minimum end the season on a high note. Well, high note may be a bit generous, but you get my point. I felt a mix of emotions as I watched the game. On one hand, I felt sad that football season was at its culmination, and on the other hand, glad that we can move on from this disappointment of a season. I felt happy for the seniors who all played well and got to end their football careers with a W, and disheartened as I wondered which non-senior players will be leaving us before next season. And, most of all, I felt relieved that we finally got a win, but apprehensive and skeptical about the direction of the football team heading into ...

A Few Positives from Moscow and Senior Day Looming

After five straight losses, what is there left to be said about the Weber State football team? Surely this season has been a massive setback by any measure. High hopes in August and September have given way to frustration, disappointment, and worst of all, apathy, in November. That being said, the Wildcats showed signs of life in Moscow on Saturday. The Wildcats gave the #8 ranked Idaho Vandals more than they bargained for, who perhaps expected the Cats to roll over and die. As I watched the game on Saturday, I wasn’t really frustrated with the Wildcats. This was by far the best they had looked since the Montana game. We kept the game interesting into the fourth quarter and saw some great individual performances. Now, I’m not really “moral victory” guy. The Wildcats still lost, which sucks, no matter what your record is. However, while watching the game, I did notice several positives and improvements from previous games. Instead of coming on here and writing about all the areas we d...

Sometimes, Being a Weber State Fan is Really Hard

The last time the Weber State Wildcats lost to the Idaho State Bengals in Ogden was 1984. Let that sink in for a second. 40 years. Terminator was the #1 movie in America, Prince’s Purple Rain topped the music charts, and Ronald Reagan had just defeated Walter Mondale in the presidential election. That was a long time ago. In the timeline of Weber State football, that’s ancient history. Mike Price was the coach of the Wildcats in 1984. The Cats went 5-6 that season and finished 6 th in the Big Sky. A lot has happened in the Weber State Football program since 1984. Six Big Sky Conference Championships, 10 FCS Playoff Appearances, 8 Playoff Wins, 7 head coaches, and well over 470 games played. Still, in all that time, the Wildcats had not lost a game to our rivals at home. That all ended Saturday afternoon. Mickey Mental and freefalling Wildcats watched as the Idaho State Bengals paraded around the field toting the newly re-introduced “Train Bell Trophy”. This marks a ne...

Wildcats Lost More Than Just the Game in Flagstaff

Six minutes and ten seconds. That is precisely how long it took the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona to take a 21-0 lead in the Red Rock Rivalry game played Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff. Believe it or not, the game was out of reach even before that. Giving up a 75 yard run on the first play from scrimmage and throwing two picks in three offensive plays is how things started out for Weber State. It’s hard to remember a game getting off to a worse start. Coming in after a bye week, the Cats lacked the juice, grit, desire, focus, and discipline to put up a respectable effort in a rivalry game. This loss cements the certainty of a losing season, the first in a decade, and more than that, a cloud of pessimism hanging over the football program is at a level not seen since the Jody Sears days. The game wasn’t the only thing that was lost this weekend. This team is losing the faith of the fanbase. If you’re reading this, you’re probably a diehard fan, and will ride or die with this tea...
